GMO’S at the Store and Fall Planting

Hello Everyone!!!!   Just recently learned from a dear friend….when shopping for produce in the grocery store……how do you tell if the item is GMO, Organic, or full of pesticides?  Well, it all has to do with the upc code on the vegetable or fruit.  If the number begins with a 9 that means it is organic, if it begins with an 8-5 it is genetically modified, and if the code begins with a 4 or less it has been grown with pesticides. This is very important information to have…..especially if you cannot get to a Farmers Market or grow your own. Thought I would share this with everyone and help spread the knowledge!!!   Here are some other thoughts I am wanting to also share with you: Fall Season Garden Planting: You can continue to grow delicious goodies in the garden….but before you do there is some preparation.

  • Seed Preparation:  You can soak your seeds before planting in solution that helps with the fall garden. The solution consists of  l T of Epsom salts in l gallon of weak tea water. Mix all ingredients together and soak the seeds before planting. For the tea water just place a tea bag into the warm water and mix until it is light brown.
  • Soil Preparation:   Add l lb. of Epsom salts per 10 square feet of garden area, and hoe in as deeply as possible. Then energize the soil with “Soil Energizer”. For the Soil Energizer: 1/2 cup plant starter, 4 T of instant tea granules, 2 T fish fertilizer, 2 gal. of warm water.  Mix ingredients together and spread over the soil. The following day begin planting.
  • Planting: Before planting you need to know the average date of the first fall frost for your area. Then back up from that date by the number of days it takes your plants to mature. Be sure to add 14 days to the stated maturity time, since the plants will mature more slowly in the cool fall weather.
  • Mulching: Mulching is a MUST for late season veggies. This will keep the soil warmer longer. If you need to….cover your plants and the mulch will generate heat.
